Ballistic Headquarters is proud to recognise our Chief Firearms and Ballistic Expert, Tom Tolley, for his pivotal contribution to the acclaimed paper, "Gunshot Injuries Resulting in Arthroplasty: A Literature Review and Case Report Resulting in a Megaprosthesis" (Annals of Case Reports, 2024). Collaborating with distinguished researchers from Adelaide Medical School and Royal Adelaide Hospital, this study investigates severe gunshot injuries requiring joint replacement, spotlighting a complex case involving a staged shoulder megaprosthesis.

Tom’s expertise in forensic ballistics proved essential, accurately identifying the ammunition as Size 8 lead shot and determining the firing distance as 8-10 metres through meticulous radiographic analysis and controlled test firings. His involvement exemplifies Ballistic Headquarters’ commitment to advancing forensic science and delivering innovative solutions for challenging trauma cases. This research strengthens our capacity to provide expert courtroom testimony, comprehensive reports, and specialised consultancy services to defence, law enforcement, and legal clients throughout Australia.

Innovation Spotlight: The Rooster Projectile

At Ballistic Headquarters Pty Ltd, innovation and applied research drive our contribution to Australia’s defence capability. One of the most notable achievements associated with our team is the creation of the Rooster Projectile, a cutting-edge counter-UAS (uncrewed aerial system) ammunition now recognised as an Australian world-first.

The Rooster Projectile was designed and developed by our in-house Ballistician, Tom Tolley, during his tenure as a subcontracted ballistic engineer to ARES Armaments Australia. This collaborative project combined advanced materials research, field testing, and applied ballistics to produce a technically sophisticated and highly adaptable anti-drone solution.
